Practicing the Presence of God

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

The most pressing and perplexing problem of the Christian life is the lack of feeling, experiencing, or knowing the presence of God in the daily rush of life.

A little book The Practice of the Presence of God was written by Nicholas Herman (also known as Brother Lawrence) of French Lorraine in the 17th Century. He took a servant’s position in a Church in Paris to serve God. He washed dishes and cleaned the Church. He learned that he could worship as well in a kitchen as in a cathedral. In his book Brother Lawrence wrote, “Lord of all pots and pans and things . . . Make me holy by getting meals and getting up the plates.” He made no distinction between work and worship. That is practicing the presence of God.

The eminent Los Angeles Baptist Pastor E. V. Hill who went to Heaven last year often said, “The problem with life is that it is so daily!” Yes, daily pressures, deadlines, schedules, rush upon us. But God is here.

“Emmanuel,” the first message of the Angel Gabriel about the Christ child means, “God is with us!” Faith . . . Faith, dear friend, is what you need. God is with you if you know Jesus as Saviour. God’s Word says it. Trust Him.

In a college classroom an agnostic went to the chalkboard (I say agnostic because there is no such thing as a true atheist. All men know there is a God; some just deny Him.) The agnostic wrote, “God is no where.” A Christian student calmly went to the board, took an eraser, and moved one letter of the statement. When he sat down the chalkboard read, “God is now Here.” The difference was faith. Do you have faith? Practice it right now. Claim His presence with you, and go out and live your daily life with faith and in triumph.

“Now thanks be unto God, Who always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and makes manifest the fragrance of His knowledge by us in every place.” II Corinthians 2:14 Faith causes you to be triumphant in daily living.

C. H. Spurgeon once spoke with the custodian in a village Church. He asked, “What do you do in this Church?” His classic, eternal, inspiring answer was, “I clean this house to the glory of God.” That’s faith. That’s practicing the presence of God.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24

“In the center of the circle

Of the will of God I stand.

There can be no second causes;

All must come through His dear hand.

All is well! For ‘tis my Father

Who my life hath planned.

    Our Vision...

    At First Baptist Clarksville we desire to know Christ through the worship of God, the teaching of the Bible, and the fellowship of believers, so that through the power of the Holy Spirit, we may be like Jesus Christ and make Him known to others, for the glory of God.
